Outdoor advertising in Kolkata: a planner's guide to hoardings, cabs, metro, retail screens and Puja media
How to plan outdoor advertising in Kolkata: where hoardings, cab and toto branding, metro, in-store DOOH and Durga Puja media fit, with a seasonal calendar and checklist from a Kolkata-based team.

Kolkata is our home city. TaxiTop Media is run from here, and many of our campaigns, from cab wraps to Durga Puja LED walls and in-store screens, have started on these streets. This guide is a practical look at how outdoor media works in Kolkata and how to build a plan for the city and the towns around it.
What makes Kolkata different
- A festival city. Durga Puja is the biggest outdoor moment of the year. UNESCO added Durga Puja in Kolkata to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021 (UNESCO). For several days the whole city is out on the street, pandal-hopping late into the night.
- A city that moves by many modes. Cabs, buses, autos, totos (e-rickshaws), trams, ferries and the metro all carry people every day. Kolkata’s metro was the first in India, opening in 1984 (Kolkata Metro).
- Strong neighbourhood identity. North and South Kolkata, Salt Lake, New Town and the older market areas each have their own shopping streets and habits. A plan that respects those differences usually beats one big city-wide buy.
- A gateway to Bengal and the east. Kolkata is the natural base for campaigns that also need to reach towns across West Bengal and neighbouring states.
The formats, and where each fits
| Format | Where it works in Kolkata | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Hoardings and billboards | Arterial roads, flyovers, busy junctions and the roads into the city | Launches, big announcements, offers for a whole market area |
| Cab and car branding | City-wide, including neighbourhoods with few fixed sites | All-day reach across localities, launches, repeat bursts |
| Toto and auto branding | Local streets and smaller towns where e-rickshaws are the everyday ride | Hyper-local reach, tier-2 and tier-3 towns in Bengal |
| Metro branding | Stations and trains along busy commuter corridors | Daily repetition to office-goers and students |
| DOOH and RetailVision | In-store screens near the shelf, plus digital sites and LED walls | Shopper messaging, day-wise offers, festive countdowns |
| BTL activations | Malls, housing societies, colleges and puja grounds | Sampling, demos, trials and lead capture |
Three Kolkata campaigns we have run
- Hoichoi, 112 wrapped cabs. In October and November 2018 we wrapped 112 Kolkata cabs for Hoichoi, the Bengali OTT platform, with dated left, right and rear photos for every car. See the case study.
- Patanjali at Tridhara Durga Puja. For Puja 2024 we put Patanjali on a 10,000 sq ft LED wall at Tridhara in South Kolkata, the first large-scale LED wall at a Durga Puja in the city, at about 525 plays a day from 25 September to 15 October, plus digital LED entrance gates. See the case study.
- RetailVision in Spencer’s stores. Our in-store DOOH network runs on around 100 screens across 15+ Spencer’s Retail stores in Kolkata, so brands can reach shoppers in the aisle, close to the moment of purchase. About RetailVision.
A Kolkata media calendar
These are broad seasons, not fixed dates. Festival dates move each year, so check the calendar for your campaign year.
| Season | What is happening | How outdoor can help |
|---|---|---|
| Poila Boishakh (mid-April) | Bengali New Year, new-season shopping and offers | Market-area hoardings, in-store screens, cab branding for offers |
| Monsoon (roughly June to September) | Rain changes routines, more time in cabs, metro and malls | Transit and indoor formats, in-store DOOH |
| Durga Puja (September or October) | The city’s biggest outdoor moment, crowds out day and night | Pandal and venue LED, gates, roads to big pujas, cab branding |
| Kali Puja, Diwali and Bhai Phonta (October or November) | Festive buying continues after Puja | DOOH countdowns, in-store offers, short hoarding bursts |
| Winter and weddings (November to February) | Wedding shopping, fairs, the Kolkata book fair season and Christmas on Park Street | Market-area hoardings, cab branding, activations at venues and malls |
For Durga Puja especially, the best venues and sites go early. Read our festive-season planning guide for a week-by-week timeline.
Going beyond the city
Many brands that start in Kolkata want to reach the rest of West Bengal too. Hoardings on the roads into towns, toto and auto branding on local streets, and activations at local markets and fairs can carry a Kolkata campaign into smaller towns. We have run campaigns in more than 100 cities and towns across India, so the same plan can extend to other states when you need it.
Kolkata campaign checklist
- Localities chosen by where your buyers live, shop and travel, not just the city as a whole.
- One lead format for impact and one frequency format that repeats the message.
- Puja and festival dates checked for your year, and venues requested early.
- Creative in Bengali where it helps, with English and Hindi where the audience needs it.
- Monsoon-safe materials and installation windows for static sites.
- Proof of display agreed upfront: dated photos for static and transit, play logs for digital.
